I finally broke down and bought me a new fangled phone - an HTC Hero from Sprint.

For years I have used different Palm and Windows based smart phones, and when the iPhone came out I really wanted one, but Sprint didn't offer it.

The HTC Hero is about as close as you can get to an iPhone, without actually being one. It runs on the Google Andriod OS and, like the iPhone, has tons of apps available for it.

For Geocaching, I use my old favoriate CacheMate, which Smitty made a version for the Andriod platform. I also found Cache N' Go, which actually logs in to GC.com with your profile and finds the 30 closest caches to you at that time. You cannot download GPX files and load them like CacheMate, but it works well for the impromptu caching adventure (provided you have network coverage available). Then I also tried Cachepoint, it's kind of in between the 2 previous ones. You can load GPX files, but it will only load the closest 30. At first didn't work because I was compiling the GPX files from GSAK, but I emailed the developer and he fixed that problem. Now I can load caches straight from a GC.com GPX or from GSAK.

Both Cache'n'Go and Cachepoint are free, and I paid $15 for CacheMate.

As far as GPS functionality, the Hero is pretty accurate from my field tests - but I still use my VistaHCx as a back up... it just takes some getting used to.

OK - so the point to all of this is, if you're looking for a new fancy, hi-fangled phone, but can't get or don't want a iPhone, then I suggest one of the Andriod phones.

And if I can provide any assistance, just let me know.

Hey Mark, I have seen those advertised, SWEET!

You may already know this but some good stuff is on the GSAK forum pertaining to a macro for the droid. Here is a link: http://gsak.net/board/index.php?showtopic=13425&st=0

Also, keep that phone in your pocket, out of sight. There are those that will take what isn't theirs. But I think you know that already Wink

I found another cool app for you... MapDroyd. You can download maps and have them on your SD card instead of using an online map (like Google). The files can, of course, be huge, but you can download them to your PC then copy them over to your Droid. The maps are not the 'best', but definately adequet for times when you don't have a cell signal.

In addition to MapDroyd, you have to download/install ContentDroyd to get the additional maps. Both are available in the Andriod Market for FREE (and the maps are free also).

We're going on a Cruise to Cozumel and I downloaded Mexico so I'll have maps while there - plus not a bad idea for me to have since we live on the border.
