Wow, I thought I would never get logged on. The forums have been burning it up lately! Roll Eyes

Back on topic: I desire to make a few simple Garmin transparent maps from tracks. I been reading and these aren't as complicated as the custom maps on gpsfilesdepot.

The tools needed (I think) are: cgpsmapper, mapedit, and Mapset toolkit. I have all three installed and have been "studying" these last few snow days. One app came with a demo movie and practice track.

I've ran it multiply times and continually receive an error when I export it to cgpsmapper. Very disappointing.

So, Ken, Bruce, anyone tried this? Most tutorials found on the web  are dated. The versions used then are different from what is available now. I'm wondering if there are some compatibility issues between the three apps with today's versions.

I am looking for someone that can take me thru this step by step. Any of you inmates up for a challange?

It's been a long time since I've done any of it Ray, so I wouldn't be any help stepping through it.

I do have some old versions of some of the programs though if you want to try them.

Seems like I remember someone having errors and it turned out they had the marine version of cgpsmapper instead of
the land version too.  Might check that.

Thank you Ken. Here is the info<in part> I have been following:

"Copyright 2007 Ross Spoonland

The  purpose of this demo is to show how to make a transparent map from Garmin track files (either
GPSr recorded tracks or hand-drawn tracks with the Mapsorce Track Tools ).
The map created has a transparent background so the basemap of your GPSr or any Garmin (Topo USA...
Canada Topo etc) detailed maps you upload along with this map will show through.

Enclosed in this zip file is everything you need to make a test map
that will install into Garmin's Mapsource.  You can then use Mapsource
to upload the map to your GPSr.  The map that is created in this demo
is an ATV trail just north of Fort Collins Colorado along Hwy 287...
just so you know where to find it on your GPSr.  After you have completed
this demo you can delete the installed map from Mapsource by selecting
"TestMap" in the Uninstall Mapset window in Mapset Toolkit.

To get started:

Download and install the following programs...

cGPSMapper       http://www.cgpsmapper.com/download/FreeSetup.exe<Did not specify version. my is V1.0.61.1>
GPSMapEdit        http://www.geopainting.com/download/mapedit1-0-31-0.zip<adding version:1-0-31-0>
Mapset Toolkit   http://cypherman1.googlepages.com/home"<no version listed. My version is V1.65>

This was created around 2007 so maybe what you have is better suited to accomplish this task.

If you send it I will try it.

I dont think I have the marine copy but what I do have doesn't match the video that comes with this.

I'll try sending the zip files to your address.  If your mail server won't accept it I can burn you a disk with
the stuff on it.  I may have some other versions at home too.   When cgpsmapper runs you should just see
a dos type command screen come up and run the process, then disappear.

Thank you Ken, I got them. No problem with mail server but Win-ders wanted to block them from extraction. A right click>properties>unblocked  took care of that.

Opening cgps mapper showed some nice info my version didn't.

MapEdit looks pretty much the same

Mapset Toolkit is just like the version in the video.
I'll give this a try and hope for better outcome.

I have another file with some material to study but am having no luck getting it open.

Anne is giving it the once over for me. It passed the mail server and is saved to my laptop but Damn Win-ders refuses to cooperate.

Merry Christmas and thanks again

You're welcome Ray.  Hope it works out for you.  I'm swamped with other projects or
I'd study up on it again.

Merry Christmas to all,

After many, and I do mean many, failed attempts, I have created a Garmin map from a track. It isn't fancy but it is ready to load to my GPS.

Some things I learned while worrying with this:

1) OJC's earlier version of cgpsmapper worked, the newer version wasn't compatible with the tutorial I was following.

2) Outlook Express would not allow me to open several of the zipped files I needed from various sources. Following mrsparrotheads advice I downloaded and saved them from the embarqmail web mail server. A nice bit of info to remember.

3) If one little step is off the map will not be created.

4)  A .mp file is not the same as a .mps file

5) I'm smarter than I look Kiss

Bravo!!  Glad you got it!

I hope I'm smarter than I look too!

One think I remember is, once you have your mp file, you can open it in gpsmapedit, then
add/import/whatever your gpx file of tracks.  Then you can convert the tracks to "polylines",
same as the roads/waterways/topolines, and recompile the map and your tracks will be
permanently on the map.   That may be what you did, I'm not sure.  I have added track lines
to the linville maps a few times that way.

The purpose of all this is what?

I guess though as long as it kept you off the streets and out of the bars, it was worthwhile....
